January 22-24, 2010 SPYBASE PROTEST The Waihopai spybase was dragged into the public spotlight in April 2008 when three Ploughshares peace activists penetrated its high security and deflated one of the two domes concealing its satellite dishes from the NZ public. The Anti-Bases Campaign was happy to support this non-violent direct action anti-war activity (which is yet to come to trial). The public face of New Zealand’s role as an American ally is the NZ military presence in Afghanistan. But New Zealand’s most significant contribution to that, and other American wars, including the one in Iraq, is the Waihopai electronic intelligence gathering base, located in the Waihopai Valley, near Blenheim. It is controlled by the US, with New Zealand (including Parliament and the Prime Minister) having little or no idea what goes on there, let alone any control. First announced in 1987, Waihopai is operated by New Zealand’s Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) in the interests of the foreign Powers grouped together in the super-secret UKUSA Agreement (which shares global electronic and signals intelligence among the intelligence agencies of the US, UK, Canada, Australia and NZ). Its two satellite interception dishes intercept a huge volume of civilian telephone calls, telexes, faxes, e-mail and computer data communications. It spies on our Asia/Pacific neighbours, and forwards the material on to the major partners in the UKUSA Agreement, specifically the US National Security Agency (NSA). Its targets are international civilian communications involving New Zealanders, including the interception of international phone calls. Post- 9/11 the GCSB and Waihopai now spy further afield, to those regions where the US is waging wars. The codename for this – Echelon – has become notorious worldwide as the vast scope of its spying has become public. New Zealand is an integral, albeit junior part of a global spying network, a network that is ultimately accountable only to its own constituent agencies, not governments, not citizens. Join us for the weekend of anti-war protest at this spybase. Come prepared for roughing it and camping out. We provide the food (we cater for vegetarians but vegans will have to bring their own). Bring sleeping bag, groundsheet, a tent, torch, water bottle, eating utensils, clothing for all weather, and $40 (or $20 unwaged) to cover costs. No open fires. How to find our camp at Whites Bay: turn off SH1 at Tuamarina (9km north of Blenheim or 20 km south of Picton) and drive to Rarangi on the coast. Follow the steep Port Underwood Road over the hilltop before descending to the Whites Bay turnoff. There is a DoC public camp at the bay with basic facilities. ABC has to pay a fixed charge per head. This will be the first Waihopai spybase protest since the Domebusters’ courageous 2008 citizens’ deflation action. Waihopai does not operate in the interests of New Zealanders or our neighbours. Basically it is a foreign spybase on NZ soil and directly involves us in America’s wars. Waihopai must be closed. See also: Spies on the ground beat ears in the sky

April
16-19, 2010
Predator. Reaper. Hellfire. These are the names which developers choose for their high-tech automated killing machines, the missile-armed pilotless drones that now prowl the skies of Southwest Asia, raining death and injury on tribal villages on the Afghan/Pakistani frontier. Yet these machines are only the first advance guard of the robot legions now being rapidly developed and manufactured in a little-understood emerging new era of human history, a trend documented in Brookings scholar P.W. Singer’s 2009 book, Wired for War. People of conscience need to take action now, before it is too late, to resist the unexamined progression of these invasive and dangerous technologies into both military action and civilian life. This gathering is being planned as a strategy conference to explore the implications of – and resistance to -- development of robotic technology for use in both warfare and civilian social control. The conference will conclude with a nonviolent witness action at the nearby Boeing/Insitu drone development facility. The conference is sponsored by the Alliance to Resist Robotic Warfare and Society (ARROWS) and the Columbia River Fellowship for Peace. For more information: |

On Facebook: As if there weren’t enough weapons here on earth, space has become the newest arena for countries around the globe to launch their struggle for supremacy. Denis Delestrac’s film Pax Americana and the Weaponization of Space is packed full of some truly startling facts — everything from the “Rods of God” (space weapons that can launch from orbit) to the fact that fifty cents of every American tax dollar goes towards military spending. The astronomical costs of arming and policing the heavens (more than $200 billion) has largely fallen to the US Air Force, but with China and other nations challenging American supremacy, there is the potential for a war to take place right over our heads. Comparison of the space race to the sea battles of the 18th and 19th Century are apt, since so many global interests are at stake. As per usual, economics are at the heart of the struggle. Noam Chomsky draws analogies between the US weaponization of space to good old-fashioned colonialism in the tradition of empire. In the name of protecting commercial investment, the US has charged itself with being the arbiter of peace in space. But with the weapons industry replacing almost all other manufacturing in America, is this simply a ruse? Many experts unequivocally state that missile defense is the longest running fraud in the history of US defense. That it, in fact, disguises true American intentions to dominate space as a means of dominating the entire globe. (Getting rid of the anti-ballistic missile treaty was one of the first activities undertaken by the Bush Administration.) If a space war were to happen, the effects could prove catastrophic. Since there is no way to clean up debris and space junk, it stays in orbit, circling the globe at some 14,000 miles per hour. At this speed, even a pea-sized piece of debris has the capacity to destroy whatever is in its path. This includes satellites that regulate most of the world’s information systems (everything from GPS to banking to media). But with China shooting down one of their own aging satellites, the race shows every sign of heating up. This time, the sky may indeed be falling. Director’s biography Born in France (1968), Denis Delestrac graduated from the Toulouse Law
University and the National School of Broadcast Journalism before leaving for
the US with a one way ticket in his pocket. It was in New York where he was
struck by the “countless pictorial opportunities” that he bought his first
camera. As a scriptwriter and filmmaker, he has made and collaborated in
several documentaries for many TV stations, audiovisual companies and cultural
Institutions. He was assistant director on Mystery of the Nile,
released world wide in 2005. Delestrac also created the TV version, a 50
minute film titled Adventure on the Nile. |

Unfortunately this event has
to be cancelled/postponed due to action
Since the end of the World War II the west has never allowed Asia to
live in peace. For the first time in history the U.S. used nuclear weapons for
mass killing in Japan. It never reconciled to the liberation of many countries
from the yoke of colonialism and imperialism.
If you would like to attend please download, fill out and
